Brittle Nails
Brittle and splitting of the nails is a common problem. Survey says that 1 out of 5 people suffer from brittle nails (Onychorrhexis) or splitting nails (Onychoschizia). They may be caused by trauma, excessive exposure to strong soap and water, polish remover, hypothyroidism, anorexia or bulimia, or after oral retinoid therapy.

To prevent brittle or splitting nails, use protective gloves when engaging in activities that are rough on hands and nails. Clip or trim nails regularly. Use fine file when smoothing the ends of the nails. Eat proper diet especially those rich in protein, calcium, and vitamins. Apply lotion on the nail and keep it moisturised. Biotin, a vitamin for treating brittle nails may be used.
